The TV commercials for NFL PLAY 60 are one of my favorite sports marketing ideas. NFL PLAY 60 is the National Football League's campaign to encourage kids to be physically active for 60-minutes a day in order to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity. As a child, I looked up to pro athletes and considered them role models and heroes who I wanted to emulate. In one of the NFL Play 60 commercials, a young kid thanks Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton for stopping by his school and mentoring them on exercising and eating right. This message tells me how important it is for an athlete to participate in mentoring as a community service initiative.
As a future college baseball coach, I want to get my team involved in a community service project which involves mentoring at-risk youth. Having a college baseball team play and mentor these kids will provide hope and a positive role model. Getting involved in community service is a great way to help promote a servant purpose and the team’s moral values as a whole. A team that possesses qualities such as these shows the community there is more to a baseball team than just the game.
